Home is where the heart is – and it makes sense that we take good care, manage and maintain it well with good housekeeping. Every now and then, we can also make some minor changes to continue improving it, beautify and keeping it up-to-date in style.
Here are a few tips and tricks that you could use in your next home decorating project:
Create more space with the illusion of a high ceiling
It’s best to have your ceiling painted in white as it expands the room visually. Leaning a large mirror against a wall can also make the room seem taller. When it comes to drapery, try hanging your curtain rails higher above your window frame. By allowing as much space between the curtain rail and your window frame, it will enhance the illusion of higher ceiling. When buying curtains, try choosing vertical patterned panels as they would visually elongate your wall height.
Breathe new life to old things
What about embarking on some DIY work such as using some spray paint or inexpensive finishing kit to transform outdated kitchen cabinets and lighting fixtures? Another simple thing to do is to change your old, dusty and yellowing electrical switch plates to newer ones (perhaps try some up-to-date designs).
Layering your Lighting
There are basically, three types of lighting. Firstly, ambient - for overall illumination of the room (usually ceiling fixtures). Next, task lighting – usually for kitchen and reading nook and lastly, accent – for decorative and highlighting. For the last one, why not try uplighting? This can be done by using a canister uplight in the corner of a room. This will cast a glow on the ceiling, which will also make the room seem a little bigger.
Create a ‘Talk’ area with your furniture
Remember that carefully arranged lounge furniture can help create a more inviting space for conversation. Try creating a U- or H-shape arrangement of your sofa, chairs and coffee table. Avoid pushing all your furniture against the wall because contrary to general thinking, this would not help to make the room bigger. Instead, by ‘floating’ the furniture away from the walls will do just that.

Hang at least one mirror in each room
Mirrors can surely make a space feel bigger and brighter as they bounce the light around the room. However, do not place it at the wrong spot as it will not give the desired result. Remember to put the mirrors on the walls perpendicular to a window – do not put it directly across or opposite a window as this will bounce the light back out of the room.
